School Evaluation Summary

This project was very enlightening to say the least. It is quite apparent that my school has a way to go regarding educational technology. The major shortfall I noticed is simply the lack of computers or digital devices for internet access for student engagement. With the lack of funding, this is understandable. However, teachers can at the very least incorporate technology into their lessons, engage students through class websites, and make use of the new Microsoft 365. If 1:1 is ever achieved in our school I believe great things will happen and students will be engaged through the tools their generation has grown up with. Digital Divide

While researching digital divide it really made me think about the obstacles involved with technology use in the classroom. I asked numerous colleagues about their experiences with technology in our school and discussed these issues with them. I even conducted a brief survey on technology with my students, just to give me a glimpse into their perspective and will be sharing those results fully in a future project. I will say that it was eye opening in that the students really took the survey to heart. This showed me that students really want to have a voice in their education, that they want to be heard. The results regarding student access to the internet was about what I expected with most having access to a cellphone w/internet access (82%), computer at home (94%), and internet at home (93%). However, most is not all. For every student to truly be equal in educational technology, all must have access to computers enough to complete their lessons. My research and creation of a presentation on Digital Divide was a very positive experience for me as a teacher. As a result of this research I can now speak on the subject intelligently with my colleagues; which I intend to do in the near future. I also learned of support programs for technology access that I was not aware of before. I am looking forward to conducting more research to provide support for inclusion of more educational technology in our school system.

Tech Trends



For this emerging trend I have chosen to discuss cloud computing. My school district, Clarksville-Montgomery Country School Systems (CMCSS) in Tennessee, was selected as the pilot program for Microsoft’s Office 365 for Education. Outlook had already been incorporated into the district for some time and our technology department jumped on board when the opportunity for working with a Microsoft cloud-based system was offered. We received the updates in June, so everything is still relatively new. Teacher training has been offered but since we are now in the middle of a school year, I doubt most teachers will be fully trained up. As an EdTech student I will be investigating the use of Microsoft 365 in the district for the long term and assessing how it is being used by teachers in (and out) of the classroom. I think this is a great opportunity to utilize the tools in 365 for my classroom, and to gain greater insight on the benefits of educational technology on a district scale. Knowing my district is the first to incorporate 365 makes me really want to use it, make it succeed, and get our district administrators to further invest in educational technology to the point where we have a 1:1 ratio of computers to students in the classroom in order for our students to fully benefit from this implementation. I believe that the use of 365 will be extremely beneficial to our teachers and students as soon as all teachers are fully trained on how to utilize its tools and all students are able to utilize a computer in every class.

EdTech Research

For my EdTech Research assignment I chose to research computers in the classroom. I want to incorporate computers in my classes and make my class web-based for the most part. I believe that doing so will increase the motivation levels of my students and make them acquire and use higher-level thinking skills. After conducting research on the use of computers and technology in the classroom I found that many have had success and those that did not simply had to use the technology in a different way. The use of computers in the classroom for Common Core seems like a natural fit, given the increased emphasis on reading comprehension and higher order thinking skills. Computers can also greatly assist those students with learning disabilities to understand what they are reading. The most beneficial aspect of computers in the classroom for me would be the time factor. I want my students to get the most out of any of the time they have for learning. In this respect, the use of Google tools to facilitate learning between teachers, students, and their peers is invaluable. I found through research that collaboration can be a great tool if it is emphasized and students are given a clear focus. As an educator with an emphasis on educational technology, I wish to use these tools to full potential but I must first address the lack of computers in my classroom with my administration. Studies and statistics from the research I conducted can serve as support for this endeavor.

This assignment was very beneficial in that I was introduced to multiple sources for research in Google Scholar and Albertsons Library. I had worked with Purdue Owl and Citation Machine in the past so I wasn't totally unfamiliar with those helpful sites. I thought Albertsons Library was a great source of information and will definitely be utilizing it in future research. Learning about doi was a first for me but I saw how it would be beneficial in citations. Overall, this was a very enlightening assignment which provided me with new knowledge and skills to build upon.

RSS in Education


     This week I researched and completed the assignment for RSS in Education. I chose to create a tutorial that gave a brief overview of RSS and how to utilize the Feedly newsreader. When I started I was not familiar with Feedly or any newsreader for that matter. I had run into the RSS logo on numerous occasions but never really gave it a second thought. After researching newsreaders and experimenting with Feedly, I have now become a believer in RSS and the value it holds for educators. I have since created a blog on my AP European History website and will teach my students the value of Feedly, if they have not been using it already. I can't wait for more articles from the Technology for Teachers feed so I can incorporate new ideas in my history classes. It has been a pleasant surprise to learn about this aspect of Education Technology.

While working on this assignment I realized that much of what I have been doing in the classroom in my recent teaching has resulted in my becoming more of a facilitator of learning than a spoon-feeder of knowledge. Much of this is thanks to technology and better practices. I now find myself instructing students how to discover new knowledge more on their own, whereas starting out as a teacher I had basically given them information to memorize and while we discussed many things in class together, I don't think the students ever had a sense of ownership in what they were doing. That has since changed and both my teaching and my students are better because of it. Like I tell my students and athletes, "If you keep learning new things and avoid making the same mistake twice, you'll become a better person every day."

Welcome!

Welcome to my EdTech Portfolio! This is where you will find the results of my many projects and other works created throughout my experience in Boise State University's Master of Educational Technology program.

I hail from Clarksville, Tennessee but am a California native. After an eight year stint in the U.S. Army I ended my time in service and earned a B.S. in History and a teaching licensure. I am currently teaching U.S. History and AP European History. I am also coaching football and track.I chose EdTech in order to utilize technology in my classroom and to eventually help support integration of more technology resources at the district level. Today's students are media-driven and as an educator I must respond in kind.
The Right Choice for Me

Being a teacher, coach, and student is very time consuming. One of the main reasons I chose Boise State University's EdTech program was its flexibility. I am able to work when I can and the timelines for assignments thus far have been adequate. I don't lose any time driving to the university. If I need assistance or am troubleshooting, I can generally always count on a classmate or teacher to be available for contact. I can share documents and collaborate with colleagues easily through Google+ and the use of my learning blog. The flexibility offered through EdTech has inspired me to start designing a series of online history courses to offer students that may not be able to fit these types of courses in their schedules. This would be a great way to offer interesting and specialized electives to high school students and could better prepare them for university coursework.
